Filming checklist
Keep this beside you while you record. Cover the six prompts and the estimate will not have to guess.
Say where you are
- Which room
- Roughly how big
- How high the ceiling
Say what you want done
- What goes
- What stays
- What replaces it
Say how you picture it
- Layout changes
- Where the light comes from
- How it should feel
Name the materials
- Floor and wall finishes
- Counters and fittings
- Colors or brands
Say the budget
- A range is fine
- What it must not exceed
Point out the problems
- Anything broken
- Damp, cracks or rot
- Anything worrying you
Before you press record
- Film in daylight, with the lights on as well
- Turn off the television, the fan and the music
- Speak clearly, and keep the phone near you
- Say what you want, not only what you see
- Talk through the sizes out loud, even roughly
- Name the finishes and materials you have in mind
- Say what you do not like about the space now
- Move slowly. Pan, do not sweep
- Photograph the details separately, close up
- If you have a tape measure, put it in a shot
